Headaches are a common disorder with nearly 50% of the world population suffering annually with at least one headache. There are several kinds of headaches that people suffer from (migraines, cluster headaches, medication overuse, etc.) Tension headaches, also known as stress headaches, affect a large percentage of sufferers. It is marked by mild-to-moderate pain spreading across the entire back of the head and around the sides of the head. Migraines on the other hand are typically felt on only one side.
What is a tension headache?
Tension headaches are typically brought on by stress (emotional or physical) but other things can cause a tension headache. This includes bad posture, concentration on something for too long, blue lights from computers, cell phones, or tablets, etc.
Tension headaches begin with a dull pain and tension in either the scalp or neck. Many sufferers say it feels like a tightening band or crushing.
How can I reduce pain?
When suffering from this type of headache, most people need to rest in a dark room. Ice packs or massage of the neck can help provide relief. Medications are also used but there are risks involved with this.
Find what is causing your pain by identifying triggers. This can be certain environmental factors, behaviors, eyewear, hormonal changes or physical problems.
How can chiropractic help?
In a study with sixty-two women aged 18 to 65, results showed that those who received spinal manipulation showed improvements in their pain after one month.
